Persistence pays off. Learning when to give up.

Written by Tim Gary on December 8, 2007 – 12:58 am -

Tonight I was reminded of how persistence can pay off, even when the world seems to be conspiring against you.
Indulge me for just a moment… and forgive the computer-speak… that part is unimportant…
I was faced with setting up a wireless network on a friends computer. Usually this is a simple operation for me, but it became more difficult due to various configuration issues I’d not experienced before. The wireless connection worked fine, but the internet was inaccessible.
Nothing I tried worked.

Changing the IP addresses, and setting things up manually didn’t work.

Changing various security settings didn’t work.

My friend, his girlfriend, and my wife had given up on the situation an hour prior.

BUT I REFUSED TO GIVE UP. Maybe I was just stubborn, or maybe something inside me KNEW there was a solution. Having worked on computers for 30 years, and knowing that in most cases a solution was in reach, I felt compelled to continue. Computers are given instructions to follow, and if they are set up correctly, they will do exactly what you want them to do. If you get one little thing wrong, they will do nothing but aggravate you.
I knew that the solution was likely in reach, and very simple once it’s found. I also knew that once found, it would be exponentially easier to solve next time a similar challenge presented itself.
Internet Business is a LOT like this.

There are a million settings, configurations, and possible results in online business. Usually your gut tells you that there is a definite solution, but sometimes you aren’t persistent enough to “try” a bunch of things in search of the right combination. I’ll bet that if you were a successful entrepreneur already, and dipping into a new market, you’d keep at it, and learn what the correct sequence to unlocking profits was. You wouldn’t just give up after a first attempt at success.

Why not act like you were already a successful entrepreneur? Keep looking for the profit-pulling sequence until you find it!
Obviously others are having success online. Sometimes a huge amount of success. The fact that they are doing so is all you need to know in order to keep tweaking the “settings” in your online business pursuits and find your own success.
The combination that unlocks your success may not be the same as anyone else’s. It may have an entirely different path, but the results can be identical. Some of us are much more comfortable writing reports, ebooks, etc… Others may find Audio to be easy and quick profit makers. Or Video! Don’t forget video–which I will be experimenting with shortly.

When do you give up? In reality you shouldn’t! You should only change paths when you no longer feel there is opportunity for success by going in that direction, OR your start seeing positive results in aother direction.

How did my friend’s computer turn out?

Well, almost 3 hours after I started, a very simple sequence of settings fixed all of the problems, and everything was working just as it should have. Yes, it took a little (ok, a lot) longer than I though it would, but persistence paid off because I knew that there WAS a solution, and I knew I had the skills and patience to make it work.

In Internet Business, just like in the computer world, everyone can learn the skills, and persistence will pay off.
