Drama = Rocket Fuel For Success
Written by Tim Gary on January 28, 2008 – 12:13 am -Unless I’m at the movies, I try to avoid unnecessary drama. Maybe you do as well. But drama often finds us no matter how much we duck for cover…
- Drama as… business plans gone astray
- Drama as… problems and personalities at work
- Drama as… money troubles
- Drama as… name callers, deceitful business practices, and being lied to or lied about
- Drama as… relationship challenges/breakups
- and so on…
It’s inescapable. It’s also a success jump-starter with few equals. Here’s a definition of drama:
“an episode that is turbulent or highly emotional”
So, we know drama is basically a highly emotional situation. Sales people and motivation experts know that Emotion Sells, and Logic Rationalizes. In other words, emotion leads to action. It should be obvious that action is required for success, and rarely does new action happen without emotion being involved.
How can this realization help you? Well, first think back to any major positive change or success you’ve had…
- It could be business related, like your first sale, a great job interview or the day you quit your day job because your own business surpassed it in income.
- How about your first date, a marriage proposal, or a long overdue breakup.
- Maybe, like me, it’s “getting out of your shell” and making your first public online posts, setting up a blog, interacting with others, and learning to thrive on it–thanks everyone for reading
Did any of those events lack considerable emotion? NO.
Why should the so-called “negative” drama lead to anything different? If you learn to recognize all emotions as rocket fuel to propel you towards positive change and success, you will become nearly unstoppable. In fact they are just what you *need* to make changes that you already know you should make.
As I’ve mentioned before (What Are You Really Doing To Succeed Online), part of the secret is to become more aware of your actions, emotions, and results. If they aren’t useful, move on to something else, and see what happens.
Did you notice the line above: “changes that you already know you should make?” Well, that can be a problem for some. You won’t know what changes you should make if you don’t know exactly what you want and have worked on a plan to get there.
You can find a detailed goal setting plan, and some great ideas on getting to where you want to go in my report Wrong Action Kills, Right Action Manifests Online Success. It doesn’t cost anything. Don’t worry if you aren’t here to make money online, or if you don’t have any interest in setting up an Internet business. The report has worksheets that anyone can use to plan their goals, and some tips on the success process.
I know drama can be anything but easy at times, but combined with a solid plan, it really can move you forward faster than anything else I know.
So.. What are you going to do with your current, or next emotionally charged situation?! Let it keep you awake with doubt, worry or anger; or are you going to use the fuel you are given to propel you in the direction you desire?
Learn from everything, make the right choice, and enjoy your dreams.

I think drama can help overcome obstacles, clear paths, foster determination, and help achieve goals if used appropriately. Unnecessary drama will create obstacles, muddy waters, decrease involvement and waste time. I know, I used to work with a drama queen. So define and divine your dramas carefully.

This is a great spin on drama. We all hate drama and how it takes over our lives — but it’s part of how the world works. So why not embrace it intelligently as a positive force for change?
Great article, Tim!

My yoga teacher said one day “Emotions are like little sign posts, see what they have to tell you” Her explanation was that each emotion (if the situation is important enough) will find a way of becoming noticed. It’s possible that eventually this emotion can manifest as an illness. But it won’t stop speaking to you until you recognize it and do something about it.
So it would seem that if you could be more in tune with emotions and what they are saying then you could get the message much sooner and thereby improve your life.
Good message!

Truth is drama is great for building up an audience online. Look at Vic from blogger unleashed. All that guy ever does is push affiliate links and swear at people and call then names and he has a huge following….oh I guess he knows a little SEO as well, but you get the idea… DRAMA = audience.

Drama is
“an episode that is turbulent or highly emotional”
We see lot of one page sites with lot of “highly emotional” scenes, equivalent to a soap to build online audience. That really plays with visitor’s emotions by showing luxury cars, maldives resorts and blah blah and eventually increasing sales, so in short Drama=marketing.

Learning about emotional selling helped us sell a lot more products.
We used to sell with logic and our sales simply stagnated.
Thanks for reminding me about this topic again. Time to write emotional sales copy again…

Great post Tim. The best proof that drama fuels success is “reality” tv shows. The amount of drama involved creates a very successful television show and can even bring people together. Thanks for this insight.

I experienced a lot of drama on some of my travels - but you are totally right - the emotions and experiences I had on those chaotic journeys help me in my development and ignited a lot of change for me

I never really thought of drama as a way to propel a human being. But, when I think about it, it has propelled me in the past. You really have to train your mind though into using it as a postitive thing. I’m really going to try to use it to help me out rather than stress me out like it has done a lot in the past. Thanks for the good post!

I think a certain amount of drama adds excitement to your life. Obviously there are limits. Much of the trick lies in how you deal with these challenges and stop them becoming dramas. there used to be an add on tv about an insurance company. their slogan was “we wont make a drama out of a crisis”
